Melbourne University Boat Club (est. 1859) is one of the iconic sporting clubs of Victoria.
Professor Irving, an Oxford University graduate and Melbourne University's second Classics Professor, established the club for the purpose of a race between a University crew and a 'crew of men from the metropolitan Banks', and it has been rowing strong ever since. Membership is open to all and is not restricted to students of the University.
Throughout its rich history Melbourne University Boat Club has produced many sporting heroes and continues to this day to be an engine room for high-performance rowing in Melbourne. Our Performance Programs are led by experienced and talented professional coaches who continue the tradition of providing aspiring and ambitious athletes with the environment and facilities to achieve their dreams.
Melbourne University Boat Club is home to Australia’s pre-eminent University Rowing Scholarship, the Jopling Family Scholarship. Additionally, our dedicated University Rowing program provides direct opportunities for students to remain in their sport.
Members of MUBC are regularly selected for Australian National teams at Junior, Youth and Elite levels and have raced in Olympic Games from Stockholm (1912) to Rio (2016) where Gold medallist Kim Brennan thrilled the nation with her victory in the Women’s 1X. Current World Champion Lucy Stephan (W4-) is among the latest in our pantheon of champions.
MUBC is a designated Rowing Victoria “High Performance Club” and we work in partnership with the Victorian Institute of Sport developing athletes within the Victorian Pathways Program. We also specialise in preparing athletes for the Australian National Training Centres and those seeking to apply for International University Rowing programs.
At our heart lies the grand institution of the University of Melbourne. From our earliest rowers, to Alumni Capt. Clive Disher, stroke of the victorious Australian Eight at the Peace Regatta in 1919 and our champions across the decades, Melbourne University Boat Club aims for the highest performance with each generation of athletes seeking to add their stories to our enviable history.
We invite you to share your rowing journey with us.
