MUBC Day 2 of Finals Aon Australian Rowing Championships
Published Fri 26 Mar 2021
Dear MUBC,
With great excitement I report on the second day of finals action from the Aon Australian Rowing Championships at Lake Barrington, Tasmania. Our Club has had another Golden Day filled with MUBC crews at every turn. Today’s medal haul stands at three Gold, two Silver and two Bronze and MUBC is currently ranked third on the overall medal leader board.
As our first event of the day MUBC fans did not have a chance to warm up before our Women’s Under 21 coxed Four of Sophie Ward, Aaliah Dawson, Katerina Bitzios, Katie Easton & Lucy Burnell (cox.) delivered a barnstorming finish to grab Silver in the last metres of the event. Ladies, fair warning next time please.
I barely had a chance to recover when both MUBC Men’s U21 Coxed Fours took medals, GOLD! and the Australian Title going to the crew of Captain of Boats Nick Smith, Fraser Miscamble, James Scott, Harry Fox and Charlie Durkin (cox.). The Bronze medal went to crew of hard-hitting Marcus Cameron, Josh Hill, Marcus Emmett, Jamie Arnold and Will Bennett (cox.)
Three Events later our Women’s Under 23 coxless Four of Jean Mitchell, Eliza Gaffney, Lily Cathcart and Laura Foley put on a rowing display leading from start to finish to dominate their event and take the GOLD! and deserved Australian Title. Well done girls, fantastic rowing. At this point your correspondent was fast running out of voice.
No let up in the program as MUBC then presented three crews in the Men’s Under 23 coxless Fours with the crew of Tom Macky, Tom Hooper, Tom Page and Will Achermann taking Silver. Well done lads, great rowing all round.
In the Open Events Lucy Stephan claimed another GOLD medal and Australian title in the Womens coxless Four. Well done Lucy, impressive row from the crew likely to go to Tokyo. Josh Booth took Silver in the Men’s coxless Four finishing close the likely Australian Olympic crew.
Finally, Damien Schroder showed his fighting qualities again with another bold come from behind performance in the U23 Lightweight Double Scull to win Bronze to add to his Silver medal from yesterday.
Well done and thanks again to our coaches, Matt Ryan, Mitch Nelson, Zac Smith, Ed Fuller and Al Isherwood for another exciting day of MUBC High Performance rowing from Lake Barrington. Time for a rest before the Eights tomorrow.
